In the past few days round here the weather has been quite bad in the morning, the fog has been very thick, in some points to the degree you can't see more than 2 car lengths infront of you, sometimes less.

The number of car's I saw that didn't have there lights on, now in bad weather like this I tend to drive a little slower and make sure not only are my lights on but my fog lights are on to.

This morning on the local bypass, I almost rear ended a small white VW Up because it had no lights on, so I slammed the brakes on, hit the horn and flashed my lights to warn them they had no lights on, thinking as most do these days "Oh I have DRL, there on"

At the junction, she had the gumption for having a go at me for flashing her, I calmly and politely pointed out I did this to warn her she had no lights on and in this weather it is bad to do so, she still didn't bother to put them on, I think about 40-60% of car's this morning didn't have lights on.

This morning I saw soo many I would have loved to have been a traffic unit, I would have pulled soo many people, it's effin dangerous.

Most drivers are sh!T these days. They're in a world of their own, and completely oblivious to everything around them.

Agree re headlights, OTOH I think foglights tend to be badly (over)used, by and large

I followed a Yeti in this morning with all it's fog lights on. Central Sheffield and a little mist. I think they just wanted to press the button and turn them on. Unfortunately they will not press it again to turn them off for another two weeks.

And DRLs do give a false sense of safety. Many forget that the rears aren't on. I'm guilty of doing just that in my wife's old B-Max. DRLs but not auto lights and half way down the road in the dark before I realise.

A memory just reawakened. When I was a kid driving down to the south of France in my parent's 244DL (HET277N) having to thank French drivers every few miles for telling us we'd got our lights on.

It makes me chuckle sometimes when you see cars with no lights at all on, at night....

And I have to say its becoming more common.

You will learn as you get older all the tricks of driving with not being alarmed or having accidents.....it is an on going learning curve every time you get in the car.

You should never honk your horn when behind someone as they usually panic as they do not know where the sound has come from and they will brake and you will go straight into the back of them?

When you go out you should only worry about what you are doing and not others as you can only make the situation worse!......have you not heard of road rage?

Depends which Volvo you own or were driving as earlier Volvo`s all the lights are on when on DRL even earlier you cannot turn them off at all.

As i say a learning curve ...and this morning lovely sunny morning at 10am and went to turn into my road off of a main road and cars are parked too near the corner ignoring yellow lines and as i turned there was suddenly an old lady walking slow with her buggy right in the middle of my road so i had to slow down with my rear still on the main road and a berk who was just judging me to get out the way had to swerve around me.....so best not to judge the speed of a car either to get out the way when the motor in front is turning.

Another good one is when looking back to pull away from a side road only move off when your eyes are looking forward as i have been caught out before as the traffic in front had stopped!!

I am not judging what you do just trying to help...

NO! in BMW's they are a device for engaging Invincibility mode , with the switch pressed , the lights surround the car in an aura that makes them invisible to speed cameras & many other road users . The moment of woe arises when their invinsibilty lights do not function as expected & the car is found creased beyond repair with the owner / driver slowly oozing through the torn floor of the once pristine machine .

My V70 & my Sprinter both have this amazing feature , but as an aged driver of reasonably sound mind , along with a firm grasp of the highway code they are only used as necessary by law !

I feel marksmen should be hidden on overhead gantries with orders to shoot out offending rear foglights & at the next one the second sniper rubs out the offensive driver as wel l , Just my views , any one wish to respond ???????

I've been amazed at the speeds people choose to drive at in this fog and the tail gating is unreal. If you cannot see the distance you can stop in and can barely see where the road goes, why drive at 50mph plus...

I think that you will find that some drivers are reluctant to turn on the lights as it uses more fuel.
And it does use more fuel albeit a tiny percentage extra.

The safety aspect of turning on the lights in poor visibility seems to be totally disregarded.
