Last time I did mine, the dealer did it on the day I picked up the new car. Drove up with my old car with personalised plate on, they changed them over online there and then, and drove home with new car with plates on. Paid them £80.
This was over 3 years ago so guess you can still do that.

Same here, last time I did it in the dealership. Rocked up with the old car with private reg, sat with dealer to remove it from car using my credit card to pay the DVLA fee, got online reference number, used this to apply reg to new car, left dealership with private reg on new car. Updated documents arrived in the post a few days later…

It's what I do and has always been painless.
A lot of dealers won't do it now. They don't get paid any extra for it, and when it goes wrong - as it did once for me - they're left holding the baby and hsving tom
waste more unpaid time on the vlower to the DVLA.

As aforementioned, remove it online and you'll get a confirmation email with all the necessary numbers (a paper certificate will arrive in the post after a few days). Once you have that email the plate is on retention and can immediately be switched onto a new car provided you have the logbook for the new car in your name as youll need the code numbers from the V5 to complete the transfer.
