2010 XC60 tailgate won't stay up (goes up and down fine)
Hi All,
I am new to this group as I've just encountered my first volvo issue that looks tricky to solve, and I haven't found my issue in the threads. I have a 2010 xc60 and the lift gate opens and closes fine, under power, but if I open it, when it reaches the open point, it slowly comes back down under the weight of the tailgate. If I press the close button, it closes quickly. I replaced the right strut and that didn't help. So, I am assuming there is some leak in the hydraulic system, but as the pump opens and closes it fine, I don't know where to start. Failure of bleeding system, bad o-ring, I don't know where to start. I don't see any fluid externally visible, so I will have to pull off the rear interior cover, just looking to see if anyone has been through this. Thank you, Aaron |

Maybe both struts needed replacing?

Yes, fixed it
I ordered a used pump assembly from Erie Volvo auto parts. I had to swap in my pump module though because the one from Erie didn’t operate the down switch, likely because the part # was different and had different programming, possibly for an earlier VIN. It seems to me there is a bad o ring (or solenoid) inside the pump that causes failure like this. I learned that the way I could test it was to disconnect the hoses from the pump while the liftgate was up. The hoses are self-sealing due to a valve at the hose end where it meets the pump. Once the hose end was disconnected from the higher of the two hose fittings the liftgste stayed up. As soon as I attached it, fluid from the hose could enter the pump and the pump didn’t hold pressure and the liftgate would fall. Unfortunately I learned all this after I spent a few hundred replacing both struts, but it made sense at the time. Try disconnecting the hoses from the pump and see if the liftgate holds.

I had the same problem on my 2008 v70 estate mk3. I changed the pump assembly (part number 31218393) which was £65 on eBay but unfortunately this didn’t fix the issue. So I bought two second hand struts for £20 each on eBay and fitted these. Problem solved. There were part number 31217640.
Points to note. The pump assembly is easily accessed in the boot. It’s on the left hand side below the windows. The struts are a bit harder to access. Take out the interior light, disconnecting the connector. Then unscrew the screw that holds it up. Then pull the whole unit down; it’s on about 6 poppers/clips. Next remove the 2 Fascia’s on the rear. Pull down the ceiling, and the struts will be visible. |
