Loss of brakes

Hi guys
I've got myself an XC90 06 plate. Bit of a strange one but a couple of times I've gone to press the brakes only to find they aren't working and the revs shoot up but the revs don't increase speed. After a few attempts the revs drop and brakes are back working. Only happened when doing about 5 -10mph. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
