I love a happy ending, thanks to Luke for exracting my prop bearing oh! and the tea and cookies.
Good to meet up with Alan another human supporter of proper cars and of course the recipient of the mudflaps Kelv who appears happy with his purchase.

Just another day in the "proper" Volvo office.

This is precisely why I join forums, not Facebook....

The forum community ( regardless or car manufacturers ) is generally a much more close knit environment, and a far friendlier place to be.

Agreed - I've been in many over the years and this is by far the best and most knowleagable. The key is having expert posters willing to devote a lot of time to helping others. Back in the late '90s I owned an MR2 (Mk1, 145bhp, ate Porsches on trackdays) and the IMOC group was fantastic. Truly global and I've got lifelong friends across the world as a result of it. Whether it's mechanical bits, styling, performance mods, or just the social side a good forum makes car ownership the best it can be.

The indicators don't go through the BFU so if the indicators are throwing a BF warning light, suspect a bad earth on a cluster.

As for the ABS, does the speedo work consistently? If so then it's one of the front sensors. Could either be a dirty reluctor ring and/or sensor tip or a break in the ABS sensor leads. Which of those will be the tricky bit to find.

Sadly not, it's still the original Bosch ABS system that doesn't retain codes. Volvo seemed to lag behind the trend on this as the ABS-2 system (which does have self-diagnostics and hence the ability to read the codes) was introduced for 1992 but if memory serves, it was 1994 when Volvo started using it.

I think he's a year or two out there Mark and also i beive those pages come from a USA site (Turbobricks???) where they often got things before we did. I know i tried a 1994 ECU in mine and it wouldn't work because the newer ECUs have a different number of active pins in the connector and are arranged differently.

Page 63 (by doc reader) of this confirms the newer ECUs are 93 onwards - before this they were Bosch ABS, after this Bosch ABS-2 which has the self diagnostics.

There have been many posts over the years where people have mentioned they can't access the ABS codes on their underbonnet readers - this is why. Also bear in mind that it would take time for the cars built in 1993 to filter through to the market so my original guesstimate of about 1994 wasn't too far out.

Worth a try perhaps ? Not like you need to buy anything to see if it did work.

Been here before with the ABS, previously its come on and stayed on though until I've pulled the protection fuse on top the relay under the kick panel. Then it stays off for weeks and randomly comes back. Never had it just randomly flashing on and then clearing itself whilst driving.

Speedo is fine

Even though mine's a '92 I do have twin diagnostic connectors which are plumbed in. I'll have a look at the weekend.

Confirmed that when the light is showing the ABS isn't working (I call this the "oh dear, deer!" test), I'll wait for it to be dry to try it whilst it isn't showing!

I think there's just a bunch of ghosts partying in the machine from having been stood for so long, as the idle was OK this morning, and so were the indicators. Go figure...
