V40 D5 2013 diesel stuttering under load, cuts out.
Our D4 Cross Country just started an alarming symptom.
When moving away from standstill the engine stutters and threatens to die. Backing off, it will recover; but accelerating, even gently it will violently stutter. Managed to coax it up to speed, and will drive. Sometimes it will stop, and refuse to re-start until it has 'rested' a minute. Almost like the engine is 'flooded'; but didn't think one could 'flood' a diesel? Tried driving with transmission in manual as the gear changes are sometime jerky too; and while it could be 'forced' to run; it was not happy at all. No warning lights. No other symptoms. Vehicle serviced, and no warning of the symptom starting. Has been fine until now when this suddenly occurred. Got the vehicle home, and took it for a test drive on level quiet roads, and managed to get the symptoms to lessen; but it would still sometimes die, especially when changing gears, or if I back off on the throttle. Vehicle off road now, so safe. Just want to know what this could be? Is it part of the engine recall issue Volvo had? https://www.whatcar.com/news/volvo-r...e-fears/n19820 Any thoughts greatly received. David |

Hi Kev,
Thanks for replying. Not 100% sure, but think it was at it's last service which was something like the 70k service earlier this year. Would I be wrong to say I'd expect that to cause a problem at all speeds? For example, the engine will rev freely in Park/Neutral without fault. It will motor nicely on the flat at steady modest speed/throttle. Only when it changes, especially when under slight load, does the issue occur. But ... I'm not expert, hence the questions here! |

I think the recall is for the 4 cylinder D4 engine but as your car is a 2013 it will have the earlier 5 cylinder motor. As you are in Bournemouth have you spoken to Volvo Cars Poole, they quickly sorted out a problem with my V40 not accelerating properly. |

Thanks for the thought.
I'd like to use Volvo, but I've found all manufacturers branded repair centres to be exhorbitantly expensive. Was that your experience at Poole Volvo? |

The problem with my car was a faulty turbo solenoid, the part was ordered on a Saturday and the car was back on the road by 9.30 on the Monday, cost for that was £160 which included diagnosing the fault.

That sounds very reasonable.
I may have to change my view. Thank you! |

An update for those who may read through later....
Took the recommendation and contacted Volvo Poole and limped the car there yesterday. Impressed! Fault found, a damaged wire leading to the fuel control valve. Will be replaced today, all sorted for less than £120. Picking up this evening. Discovered that if get servicing done with them, not only are prices competitive but gain 12 months of 24/7/365 Volvo assist breakdown service. Thus don't need RAC/AA. Also the car is fully washed, which we often get done elsewhere. So, when taken in total, the offer is compelling. Plus access to loan cars when available. So far, very happy with the process! |
