Default turbo lag

I dont know if its me being silly, but I find that when I start from standing set off I feel I have lots of power (as my girlfriend says you can feel the G's lol), but found that when I want to overtake, I change down and put my foot down (like kick down) I feel it takes alot longer to reach speed, like theres lack of power. My dad has the estate version so I might take that for a spin to see. I have a s40 06 2.0d se 14000 miles, hope this helps.

many thanks
biggs

I've not had any problems with overtaking and neither have I noticed any discernable turbo lag. In fact, it's so smooth that I can't even tell at what revs the turbo kicks in. In this respect it's so much nicer to drive than my old Golf IV 1.9 TDI which had a horrible hole in the rev range that the engine would fall into from time to time. Plus if you over-revved that engine you'd lose the turbo completely when you went for a gear change and it would be dog slow.

The power starts at 2000rpm and the car seems to surge forward adequately well, especially in 4th. Unlike petrol engines, diesels don't require heaps of revs.

It doesnt feel as quick when you stretch the gears up to higher revs, but if you watch the speedometer, you notice it's actually speeding up pretty damn quickly. You just feel the torque kick in very low down.

I came from a Honda accord 2.0 vtec. so the engine behaviour on the 2.0D is almost the exact opposite to the petrol honda.

Yes as already been said, it sounds as if you are over revving. Diesels produce their max torque low down which once max torque has been reached, will not increase.
If you were to look at a torque curve, in theory it would be ramping up to max torque at a certain engine speed then be flat for most of the rev range and then suddenly tail off. This is the best in terms of modern design.

You will certainly feel the rush of torque as you hit the "powerband", but feel no noticeable extra surge beyond, so if you change down and increase revs, unless you are below the powerband, then it won't feel that quick.

I can't remember if Volvo publish the torque/bhp curves for their engines as I've not looked at a brochure recently, but some manufactures do (Saab for one).
