For the mk1 XC60 which is what I think the OP is looking at, all AWD diesel models will be 5 cylinder. If they're looking at FWD, then it's more complicated but as far as I'm aware, in 2016/17, the only diesel FWD would be a D4 which is a VEA engine. There was no D5 FWD at that time
That’s correct… and to add the 5 cylinder AWD models will have the 6 speed auto (if geartronic), 2015 model year and later 4 cylinder 2wd models the 8 speed.

On the mk2 xc60 all diesel engines are 4 cylinder VEA, the d5 being the “power pulse” version.

My question is do I go for a D5 5 cylinder or the 4 cylinder VEA engine. The cars I'm viewing all have full service history, very similar ages and mileages.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
D4 VEA 2.0l engine could have been so good but a fundamental and frankly disgraceful design flaw relating to the EGR cooler totally ruined it's reliability.

In summary all other cooler designs on the earlier engine designs were sensible with the heat exchanger flow path being a tried and tested straight through design that has stood the test of time and is reliable and does not block. Then some total be11end decided to fold it completely in half and introduce not just a slight bend but a 180 degree one! I used to design pipelines so I know a little bit about fluid dynamics and losses in bends. Granted this is not fluid but gases that are flowing but some of the physics are portable concepts and it's not the benefit of hindsight that tells us that 180 degree bends = massive risk of deposition and blockage.

I've worked with 3 people who have owned the 4 cylinder version and every one of them had EGR issues.

Get a 5 cylinder. In the second hand market you'll not pay much more for a 220bhp D5 in Lux Nav trim than you will for a 190bhp D4 with basic trim so you might as well have the best. There's a slight body styling difference between the SE and the R-Design (and the R-Design has buckket style seats) personally I much prefer the more modern looking integrated exhaust design of the SE model to the more dated appearance of the round tailpipes on the R-Design but it's down to personal preference.

Just in case the consensus isn’t clear I’ll add another vote for the 5 cyl.

I have a 2017 V60 cross country AWD auto D4, 5 cyl euro 6 originally 190bhp but with polestar it’s up to 220bhp.

Buy D4 vea from 2017-
If older buy the 5 cyl
If just driving short distances buy a petrol.

D2, D3 are lower power levels and not 2 or 3 cylinder engines. D6 is the diesel hybrid but still had the 5 cylinder diesel
Indeed it is.

I too would go for the 5 cylinder and also have the D4 AWD.

I have a 2.4 D4 AWD XC60 from June 2015 and it is Euro 6. When I was looking, some other models from 2015 were Euro 5, so worth checking if that is an important factor for you.

Ideally I would have liked a 5 pot 2.4 D5 version, but could not find one in the timescale I had as I wanted ACC specc'd too. That said, I have not felt that the D4 was underpowered in any way - quite the opposite actually, as I find it has plenty enough 'oomph'!

The 2.4 D4 can be tuned (re-mapped) to the same power as the D5. There's the pricey Volvo 'Polestar' labelled upgrade or a variety of aftermarket tuning specialists to choose from.

I have a D5 and feel that it almost has enough 'oomph' but could do with a little more (I owned a few 3 litre 6 pots before the XC60 so became accustomed to a certain amount of power).
