Ford Granada - 1975 - The Sweeney - excellent year, bought my first harris tweed jacket that year. Whats this got to do with my grandmother? And why do you think that my eyesight is defective to the degree where I am unable to clearly define objects at a distance exceeding 6ft?

My dear fellow, I am rather concerned about you - are you quite allright?

This topic has lost the plot I think...

Mind you, you could - theoretically - use any old cambelt, given the tooth size was the same AND you made sure that the number of teeth between BDC on the crank wheel and TDC on the cam wheel was the same. But that would involve adding components to the block to make sure that this was possible. And given not other variables..
Cheeper to buy a Volvo belt really! Chuck that pinto belt where it belongs..
In the bin with the rest of the fud scrap mate...

A whole tread about absolutly nothing.

The answer to the origonal question -

All the silver top 2.1 engines are totaly safe.
Most of the later engines are also ok but I'm not total sure of the exact ones.

I find it very strange you should have belts snapping all the time!
I have only seen belts snapped on the volvo OHC a small number of times.
Sometimes it has been due to not changing the belt on (20,000 miles or more past the correct milage) and the other one is lack of maintenance running with filthy oil reusting in the can oil ways blocking and seizing the cam.

B234 and B204 are definitely interference. B230K may or may not be depending upon who you talk to. All other petrol engines fitted to the 200 series should be non-interference. All bets are off if the head has been skimmed in the past or a high lift cam fitted.

Fitting a belt too short or too long will put the tensioner into an area it was not designed to work in resulting in too much or too little tension in the belt. Continually readjusting the tensioner will lead to premature failure as will oil contamination from a leaking oil seal or contamination from coolant.
Volvo engineers are not fools, fit the proper part.
