Sensus Map Update Practicalities
For my 2018 XC 40 R Design Sensus navigation, I have my new map update loaded onto a USB stick. The update installation starts as expected when the stick is inserted with the car sensus display active but how on earth can I keep the display active to allow the full update to load without running the engine? The Sensus display doesn't stay on in ignition position 0 with the car parked and even if I leave it on ignition position 1 it switches off after a short while.
I cannot find any way in the manual or online to get round this. John Galloway, Scotland. UK |

As per the other vehicles with the new Sensus (XC90, V90, S90, XC60, V60) you plug in the USB with the map update and just drive around as normal. The car will update the map in the background and then let you know when it is about finished (and you then take out the USB stick and turn off the car, next time you start car will be the new version).
It can take 30+ minutes of driving to update, and if your journey is not that long then just leave the USB stick in place and the update will carry on the next time you start the car up. The screen will also show you the % complete. Oh, and most of the time the sat nav will carry in working right up until its almost completed the update. Hope this helps.

Thank you apnicolle. I understand.
The main learning point for me is not to leave an update until the last minute before travel. Regards, John Galloway |

XC 40 T5 Momentum Sensus Navigation
Dear all,
I acquired a Volvo XC40 Momentum in Brazil. Here, this model does not have the Sensus Navigation available and Volvo is charging BRL 6,000 (almost EUR 1,500 ) to release/unlock the navigation software because the car already has the Hardware. Would anyone in the forum know where I can get this software to download and release/unlock Sensus Navigation in my car ? Tks. |

I have a 3 Data sim in the V90 which allows for the maps to be downloaded automatically over the 3G/4G network - the sims are £40 for 24 GB and they last for up to 2 years. It works really well and it also enables other features on the maps - i.e. live traffic, the ability to ask to find a coffee shop on route along with enabling spotify and the other apps. You just need to make sure the update option is selected in the menu to use these features on the go - the other option is to connect your car your local WIFI and update the maps that way, but you have to leave the car unlocked for this to work or sit in it for 30+minutes.

I don't think it lets you do some of the larger map updates over a cellular connection?

My V90 updates fine over the cellular connection - there is an update every week or two. That said without going back out to the car now I couldn't hand on heart say which regions are being updated but it is definitely the UK maps that are updated.

It refused to do the North West Europe update over the air on mine, had to buy a 64GB USB stick to download the 40-odd GB file. That took a while to install in the car.

I've just taken delivery of a new XC40, I'm getting 'new update' messages, looks like maps need updating, specifically France, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Russia. My question is two-fold, firstly how do I find out what my home region is, in the list of maps in the download centre there doesn't appear to be anything for UK, and secondly, can I delete or uninstall maps I don't need, Russia for example, thanks

you don't need to update any of the maps except your region - unless you're travelling further afield. There's no way, or advantage, in removing any country maps you don't need.
Sensus will often say new update available for other countries, but you can ignore if yours's is up to date. Downloading the map you need onto USB then putting in the car is the best way (though some owners seem to have problems with this, but it's worked for me over last 3 years).
