Doesn't sound similar to my ear as it's not that regular
Here is a recording: https://youtu.be/yp53lZ7h4SY (from a phone held above the transmission tunnel by a glamorous assistant).

Could it be the pressure release bearing in the bell housing! Does it disappear when you put your foot on the clutch?
Also as the gearbox has the overdrive I believe the oil wants to be a bit thinner than 20w50 I have read that 10w30 is a better choice, but to be honest it might not make too much difference!

Hi Dean
The noise doesn't go away with the clutch depressed, which voids most of my theories too. Perhaps if the friction plate is down to the metal? I've even been wondering if it might be the speedo cable or the propshaft anti-vibration springs (probably not their proper name) but can't be sure. As such I've handed it over to a professional (trustworthy local independent garage that specialises in older cars) to diagnose. Good to get this out the way now as I plan to drive to Austria and back in October.

I don't think the friction plate will be down to the metal, otherwise you would feel the clutch slipping. I am trying to rack my brains as to what it is. I could hear the engine noise in the background from your utube video as it was revving. This didn't seem to alter the noise of the rattle when revving, so that is why I was thinking the clutch release bearing. It does seem to point to the gearbox of some description, but those gearboxes are near bullet proof!

Thinks I would look at
Speedo cable, try some light oil down the cable - a test run with it off Gear linkage, could be a rattle in the linkage/gear lever Gerbox/engine mounts could have failed Prop UJ's but would normally expect vibration Timing gear is a good suggestion but it should sound engine noise rather than gearbox. After all that it is gearbox off to investigate the clutch and gearbox |

The engine and gearbox do wobble considerably when sitting at idle, as does the gear lever. Not having any experience with these cars previously I assumed it was just a feature.
Pretty sure I ruled out the prop & UJs by running it in neutral. Failed mount(s), speedo cable or clutch linkage would be happily easy remedies so are my favourite theories. The car drives fine, very nicely even, it just sounds like a death metal Christmas sled.

Partially seized propshaft centre bearing. Still made a noise in neutral because of the engine & box jiggle.

Indeed. All sorted now.
I've turned my attention towards some luxuries - the removal of the old stereo head unit and speakers (sorry Dean) and replacement with a hidden amplifier and Bluetooth reciever, paired with some more period correct parcel shelf style speakers. Next up some boot carpet refurb I think. Plus trying some different grades of oil to try and quiet down the overdrive unit.
