Then I wouldn't expect to average over 50mpg then. My point was to see how long it takes of seriously good mpg to undo the stop start stuff we all have to encounter..

Just had my worst tankful yet in my V60 D4 manual - 45.9mpg brim to brim. Of the 650 miles I drove on the tankful, less than half was motorway / open road driving, the rest was my 3.5 mile commute and urban trips of less than 10 miles in single-digit and subzero temperatures.

I SO agree!

First 2 miles of my commute = urban = 28mpg
Then 17 miles = open A road @55 - 60mph = overall average of circa 50mpg
Then 1 mile = urban = takes journey to overall average of 47 to 49 depending upon traffic lights.

But regardless - it weighs nearly two tonnes, does 0-60 in about 8 seconds and gives 40+ mpg. I'm content.

Exactly this. My first Volvo was a 1999 V40 2.0T, the light-pressure turbo variant of the T4.

I thought it was great at the time, but the V60 is FAR quicker and punchier, roomier, rides and handles better, and is over 60% more economical.

Despite it being some 350kg lighter, I was lucky to see 30mpg from the V40. My best ever tankful was 33mpg :-o

Exactly, if someone could have guaranteed getting 40mpg min from a D5 id I have snapped up a second hand one, this is as good (ok apart from the noise) and I have all the latest toys to keep me amused for a good few years.

Seems from a temperature/mpg point of view, I probably bought at the worst time of year.
Love the car but my best mpg over a month is 42.7.

The car has only just reached 6000 miles so plenty of time to loosen up.

I cant see it ever reaching anything like the claimed mpg, but if I can stop enjoying the car and think economy, I am sure it would improve.

Takes about 10,000 to free up and get the better mileage.

I believe winter diesel is distributed between November and March in the UK, so this will also contribute to poorer mpg figures at the moment.

I've been increasing my cruise speed to about 70 mph from low 60 ish, and this seems to be improving my fuel consumption. I'm guessing it has something to do with the relatively long gearing....?
