Default paint removal

bit of a silly one here, the last owner in his wisdom tried to paint the gear numbers back onto the gearnob with a garish yellow paint , the mrs suggested using nail varnish remover to remove it ?
i would rather have no numbers on it than whats showing just now
its the wooden effect gearnob that had the white numbering

some of the white is showing through from underneath which makes it even worse!
dont know if i would be better just changing it
whats your thoughts guys ?

Honestly in the long run I would replace it as well.
