Default Fuel filter fun

So the fuel pump isn't very happy on my 360, so at long last yesterday I went to fit my replacement bosch one.

I found the small plastic inline fuel filter was clogged with rust and sediment to the point it had gotten through to the pump and was killing the pump.

So I phoned Volvo... NLA

I went to the small backstreet motor factors down the road... "our system says it is 8mm inlet and outlet not 12mm, that's not the right filter on your car"

It is the right filter as it has been on every single 360 I've owned.

I saw a generic looking filter that looked quite large for sale on euro car parts, so I phoned them up and the guy on the phone couldn't be bothered to get off his backside and measure the inlet and outlet for me saying he was only there to deal with trade. When I told him I am trade as I'm a self employed mechanic he rushed me off the phone.

So I had a look online and found a post on 300 mania about the filter from Ride_on saying to use a Baldwin BF7693.

So I have ordered one for £19.60 delivered off ebay.

What a rigmarol thisbhas turned out to be! So maybe this weekend I will have a working 360 again.

You're welcome

Its a gravity fed injection pump and needs a large feed, took me a while to find it after using various billet ones that I'd drilled out Sytec alloy nipples/adaptors to make sure the flow was good. Was then worried they might snap. The original and the Baldwin one seem to be a "strainer" rather than a filter, ie large holes to avoid restriction. Also switching to 1/2" rather than 12mm threw up more options on the search.

That 300 Mania site used to be heaving 15 or so years ago.
I had a bog standard 1.4 340DL and loved it. No PAS. Really great car. I remember everyone being keen on the 2.0 360 and no one being keen on the CVTs.

I found another option recently - a Facet 43176 (plus adaptor on the output side). That's a more conventional filter, and it's clear, but in practice I suspect that the Baldwin option is perfectly fine for most applications - it's only really there to keep big lumps out of the pump, IMO.

cheers

James
