Eight Tips for a Positive Flying Experience
* tell the airline at least 48 hours before you travel that you need assistance
* be realistic about your needs & do some research before you go e.g. how big are the airports to/from - will you need assistance at both ends? * check the length of the flight- then if necessary check there will be an onboard wheelchair so you can get to the toilet. * stand your ground at check in- you should be able to take your wheelchair to the aircraft door, unless it's particularly heavy or complicated. * be in control of the support you need- e.g. ask to be left in a cafe perhaps rather than a waiting area away from services. * if travelling with a complex wheelchair or scooter- protect & label it e.g. the battery isolation switch, baggage handlers are paid to work at speed not with care, consider bubble wrap. * wherever you arrive at the airport, car park, drop off point etc. there should be a call point, so rather than struggle, get assistance to come to you. * if something goes wrong, let people know, initially explain to the airline and/or airport and if your not happy tell the civil aviation authority.
