It didn't make noticeable difference to the D5.
I also used it on my Honda CRV diesel, now this had bad knock at tick over which was completely cured with injector cleaner!
Note of caution, I added the remains of the injector cleaner to my Honda fuel tank and it promptly threw an engine code when the fuel filter blocked a bit with crap from the tank. Expensive filter on the Honda!
I didn't have so much left from the Volvo job as the fuel filter cover is pretty big and possibly more fuel in the tank to dilute the left over so I didn't have the same problems.
I used liqui moly after hearing good things about it on here.
Their engine cleaner definitely works, made my tappets quieten dramatically!
So a diesel engine will run when fuelled with practically neat cleaner? I'd be worried about a possible lack of lubrication causing excess wear in the high pressure pump.

The liqui moly is made so you can run the engine on it neat with NO problem ,

Additives are more lubricating than diesel.

Well, never seen one which doesn't claim to add extra lubricity to the fuel. They always claim that because diesel isnt a great lubricator and doesnt have enough sulphur anymore, that you NEED to use their additive in order that fuel pumps and injectors dont die a horrific painful death of the highest order, or words to that effect
Some truth in there, but somewhat over-exaggerated

As an additive....anyone tried mineral 2 stroke ?
Worked a treat on my P1 and improved the mpg, still adding it to my P3, although no mpg gain

To achieve the emissions that modern regulations require, nozzle opening tolerances are a couple of microns and that's it. Obviously probing the nozzle with a bit of wire if going to kybosh the spray pattern, but in reality, you don't have to have a lot of build up to bugger the spray pattern either.

Surely the injectors are designed to take that into account?

Causes a damaging build-up of zinc on the injector nozzles, apparently.

Thanks for all the feedback, the temperature every day is in the high 40s to low 50s (Full Sun) the testing station is about half an hour away on a motorway so it should be a hot engine by then !!
