Default Volvo S40 Deck Error

Hello all,

Just joined, though have been browsing for a while, great forum!

The CD player of my 2006 Volvo S40 has recently started displaying a "Deck Error" and no longer functions. I took it to the dealership for an unrelated problem but asked about it at the time and was told it would cost £800+ to replace, which seems slightly excessive for a CD player. Is this the only solution? Has anyone else and this problem and managed to resolve it?

Thanks all

I would try a few other dealers than the one you went to as you should be able to get the stereo for closer to £600 but that's about as good as you'll get from Volvo.

You'll have to do a search on here but there is somewhere that you can send the unit off to be repaired which is a far cheaper option. Sorry can't remember any more details than that ATM.

Search for Marcel, he can repair it for a fraction of the cost.

Marcel's details.

Central Services (Ipswich)
Volvo radio service
188 Spring Road
Ipswich
Suffolk
IP4 5NR
01473 725953

ISTR that he want about £150 for the repair. Volvo do indeed charge £600+ as I only found out about Marcel AFTER mine was repaired.

That was exactly who I was thinking of but couldn't remeber the name. I'll have to save these details as no doubt I'll eventually need them myself.

Cheers,

Default S40 Deck Error

I had the same problem with my 2005 S40 6cd deck. DECK ERROR appeared on the screen and I could not eject any cd's. I could still switch between and play the 6 cd's I had in the unit.
After seeing the prices being quoted online to repair, I decided to leave it a while, but after nearly 8 months of listening to the same cd's I cracked up.
Whilst driving along I tried the eject button for a laugh, and out of pure frustration I thumped the front of the cd player with the side of my fist while it was trying to go through the motions.
Next thing I new a cd had ejected! I was then able to switch between and eject all the cd's! I couldn't believe it! It now plays and ejects cd's without a problem.
This was 4 months ago and I have not had any further problems. (but I now only use a max of 1 or 2 cd's in the unit at a time)
It was as if something inside the deck was out of alignment and thumping it reset it.
I know this sounds like a bit of a neanderthal approach, but it worked for me!

Default Removal of cd unit

Can anyone explain the first couple of steps you take to remove the cd unit? I have a disk error display and just want to see if I can dislodge anything!

Default c70 >06 Deck error

Ive got the same problem. Had Volvo assist out to sort out a battery about a year ago and asked the guy to take a look at the CD player. He reckons this is a common fault.
similar story with costs quoted by dealership in Bristol. then spoken with a local electrical specialist who could review the changer and probably fix it for approx. £110-£150.

Put it off for a while as I didn't have the tools to remove the dash without breaking something. today car wen in for a service and asked the service centre to remove the changer for me.
They have talked up the work involved and have told me that the unit is an integral part of the fibre optic system known as MOST (not sure of spelling) and to remove the unit would disrupt the main dash diplays and aircon etc.

they are suggesting that the unit is sent away and they keep the car until the until returns so that the electronics can be properly re-set.

It seems ridiculous that the changer cannot be removed without such disruption.

can any one give any further guidance on this?

that is, can the changer be removed and the radio re-connected whilst the unit is in for repair.

Is it just a case of reconnecting the unit or is there re-programming involved?

what displays or functions would I lose if what they say is true?

I would do this myself, however if the wiring/displays are going to be screwed then maybe I shouldn't.

I'm trying to keep the cost down, but seems like every option adds additional costs!

I have this issue and I am going to attempt to repair the unit.

Everything I have read about this points fingers to a toothed gear that looses a few teeth after a dead battery is replaced, so my reckoning is that if I can get the CD changer in bits it may be possible to replace the gear.

Now the end result could go one of two ways. It either comes apart and can be replaced and put back together again OR I totally c**k it up and the CD changer becomes FUBAR. But hey it aint working anyway so what have I got to loose?!

If I am successful I will of course post a handy "cut-out-and-keep" guide. If anyone has any useful info on what I am about to attempt please let me know!

Fingers crossed!
