Despite plenty of plusgas and being left, they both managed only a few turns before snapping their little spot welds or whatever holds them in place. Much fighting later and I cut the radiator mounts off with a multi-tool, then had space to get in with grips and an impact gun to get them out. Will rebuild with new rivnuts in when the time comes.
Fingers crossed for a bit more dry weather and hopefully finish up soon.
Yep, that almost always happens, the exposed part of the thread is exposed to the weather and rusts badly so they won't come out. I did the same as you, got decisive with the angle grinder and then welded new captive nuts on, put the bolts back in with plenty of lube and they should come out ok next time, especially as I welded the nuts on *properly*. You have my sympathy, but as I think you've found out that's the most difficult/irritating part of a rad change.

Well that's a job I don't want to do again in a hurry. Started out rebuilding the radiator 'pack' before the rain started, and ended up sticking at it through the wet weather to get done. The intercooler mounting plates are a terrible design, the 4 little tabs on each side are woeful. Still, all back in, test drive done and all is well. The R will become my daily now, the 240 will get new front discs and pads before getting sold. Maybe now I can focus on the Capri for a bit...

Don't forget to replace the oil seal on the engine block end of the turbo oil return pipe . These are always a good source for leaks , especially if you've had a blocked pcv system.

Done within a month of buying, including full PCV and cam seals.

With only 2,700 miles done since last year I did an oil service this morning, along with another gearbox oil drop and fill.
I think, time permitting, I'll have a look at fixing the sunroof this year. Not worked since I bought the car.

With the R now in daily use, what was a minor irritation became a bit of a louder noise, so I took advantage of the nice weather (and a break from welding the Capri) to strip the drivers side hub down since after much swerving around I think this is the bearing that's kapput.
After removing the hub/bearing it has 1- 2mm of axial play in it and is rather graunchy, so new FAG item on order.

New hub/bearing fitted, nice and easy. Stretch fit gaiter for CV joint, in situ, less so, but all done.
Test drive and she is whisper quiet, happy days.

Dude I feel your pain.

I have a 98 V70R project that I've sunk £2500 into and it still doesn't work!

Just done the pump, timing belt kit, aux belt/tensioner and alternator to find the cylinder 3 plug thread is knackered and the HG has failed.....

Anyone want to give me £2500 for a V70R in Coral Red complete with too many new parts to list including wheels/tyres give me a shout...

Come and grab it off my parents drive in Stratford, East London.

The joy of old Volvo's...

I really enjoy mine, but TBH I'm an old Ford man at heart, and with the Mk3 Capri nearly ready for it's MOT and a Mk1 on the way I think it may be leaving soon.

This week the car got rather hot, one bar below the red. Not seen that before, and with the fan running full chat to keep the temp down it needed looking at. Noted the top hose was hot, bottom stone cold, so suspected a stuck closed thermostat. After stripping down this afternoon and cooking the stat confirmed it as stuck, failed to open full stop. Refilled car without 'stat, came up to temperature nicely, top and bottom hoses warm, and as expected cooled when at speed.
New Volvo part on order.
