Default 2.0D mpg readout out to lunch

So, the little readout screen, that says your average mpg, bonnet open, time for service rtc, is telling me allsorts.

It tells me my average speed is 18mph, most of the time, even with carriageway work. It also throws numbers at when I twist the dial for instantaneous mpg, the value goes from 20 to 99.9 and everywhere in between with a steady foot. If it were a green readout it would be like the matrix.

What causes this? Any idea?

Thanks Simmy, I'll give it a go. Sceptical though.

Rotating the rotary switch on your stalk should scroll you through DTSC status, average speed, instantaneous MPG and AVG MPG and miles to empty tank....

Thanks Simmy, I was unsure as to whether this would work, but it did. Gives me a stable reading now and something that makes a bit more sense.

Still disappointed at the rather shate MPG though. I'm struggling to get 40 mpg on a stable 70 mph run, and around town I'm getting low 30s.

check for any sticking calipers or binding hand brake set the tire pressures slightly higher than standard dont lead foot and learn how to slow without brakeing and your mpg should improve how dose your car run in general? is it well maintained? keep us posted with any improvement

It is quite well maintained, and a fresh MoT a week and a half ago, for what that's worth. Will check tyre pressures again and adjust accordingly.
