Simons exhaust
Hi, I have a Simons exhaust fitted on my B20 and it sounds as though I may have a loose baffle on one of the boxes, I get a rattle on acceleration and deceleration. Will it have any effect on it's performance and should I just live with it or replace it. Can I replace it with any other off the shelf box which fits without compromising the performance? Getting a Simons here in Portugal can be expensive

This might not be helpful - but - are you sure?
In my experience rattles / vibrations can seem to be coming from one area but often happen to be coming from another. If the exhaust comes apart easily (which could be a big if) you might be able to remove the suspect part and then see if that part does indeed rattle. As for replacements you could then start to measure up what you need. You might find that parts can be interchanged. Unless the diameter of the exhaust is severely restricted I doubt you'd notice any change in performance. The exhaust you have sounds like it has a larger bore than wot woz fitted by the factory...

Quite right.Looks like I'm having an "exhausting" time. The back box on the PV needs replacing also but I already have a replacement ready to fit!

Which Simons exhaust did you purchase for your 144? Did you purchased the sport / E version (part 071-K with the 54mm tubing) which appears to be the only system that Simons still lists for the 140 on their website? If so, the 071-K that is on my 142 uses straight flow absorption type cannisters. There are no conventional baffles inside the cannisters to come loose. The cannister is filled with 'stuff' with the exhaust pipe running straight through. I suppose it is possible that the straight through pipe that has a bunch of perforations on it broke loose from a weld; but, I would expect more of a clunking than a rattle. So, if you have a rattle and you have the 071-K system, I would start looking elsewhere for the rattle. I find that aside from body contacts due to incorrect positioning during assembly, the two common sources of rattle on 140 exhaust systems are:
- fracturing of the bracket that is attached to the transmission that the down pipe hangs from - failure of one of the suspension donuts for the tail pipe hanger allowing the bracket to bang against the body For whatever reason, the donuts for the tail pipe hanger appear to be of very poor quality. They snap quite regularly. I went through 3 before giving up on the donut suspension arrangement and switching to a flexible strap hanger. If you have a Simons system that uses the non absorptive cannisters, then yes a baffle can come loose. In terms of operation of the engine, any replacement cannister with a length, pipe size and pipe placement that will fit should work just fine. I can't advise on the auditory results.
