Which transmission do you have?

That link is for Dexron III F/G which you say is wrong, but is what you used.

Are you saying that Dexron 111 F/G is wrong for the OP's application but OK for yours or was it a typo?

Have looked at both Haynes and Chilton/Haynes and neither are any help as they both seem to ignore that there was a change of transmission model at some stage.

I am planning a fluid change on my 1998 V70 sometime soon and bought the Carlube ATF-U based on previous threads on this subject.

My '98 V70R AWD was a 4 speed auto for which Volvo recommended (at the time of production) Dexron IIE ATF - I flushed it through with Dexron III which is fully compatible and replaces Dexron IIE.

If you have a look at my website https://www.duckfieldengineering.com/850R/ and click on the 'Deciphering VIN' link you'll see which number to check in your VIN to see which gearbox is fitted. I reckon it'll be an AW42 like my old one, so the gearbox ID number should be an '8'.

If so, you'll need Dexron III. Pic below shows how dirty my old ATF fluid was!

NB This is my 'development' site, the live one will be at https://www.850R.co.uk shortly... (just need to bounce someone who has cyber-squatted on my site URL!)

I'm loving mine, only had it a few months, although there's been some unforeseen expenses and now I need to adddress the rear suspension - probably shocks and / or bushes !

I believe L 3 D is the 4-speed.

You could wonder? We've got to 17 posts with this thread and we're only now getting close. Yet an all, the OP is found too idle to establish to us (or himself) what car he owns, and what gearbox it has.
Hidebound to keeping this secret, what we do know for sure is either:

1) His keyboard doesn't work, and he can't fix it, or...
2) The keyboard does work - Google is too complicated.

Jeez... I mean, minded to this ongoing struggle, what chance the gearbox?

I just bought an 850 R with about 69,000 miles on it, when is it reccomended to change the ATF?

On an unrelated note, I'm having a bit of trouble finding my radio code for my 850 R. The serial number is V08350H2269501D. If anyone could find the code that would be very much appreciated.

I would say yes, partly because you may not know the previous driver & conditions.
These oils can be purchased at reasonable costs- particularly in 20 Ltr drums. I use Westway Lubricants or Smith & Allan: good on quality and service.

It then becomes part of the regular service schedule (see previous advice by the forum members) The next owner will love you!

Radio code-I believe a descent Volvo garage can give you the code- it belongs to you, I'm sure others will name a garage for you.
Regards Bob.
