10 Mile round trip and a trip to Aldi today, car running perfectly, hard to believe that it's done around 200,000 Miles.

Jeeeeeeez, even i live closer to an Aldi than 100000 miles!

Joking aside, i think you've cracked it. Once you're sure, i'd suggest an oil/filter change, just to get rid of any fue contamination on the oil from whre ti was running rich.

I thought about that, looked at the oil expecting it to be black, looks good and clean, but I might give it a treat of new oil and filter.

I wish that I had an Aldi in walking distance!

What is amazing is that the car doesn't use any noticeable amount of oil. My friend's much lower mileage one does.

In the future I may have to sell my 1.7 GLE, its been standing unused for some years now.

By the way, just installed the latest Linux Mint (20.2) on a spare drive, pretty good.

Unburned fuel is clean so will keep the oil clean but make it thinner - it's more of a precaution than anything but worth taking IMHO. Better to poteantially "waste" an oil/filter change than waste the engine which from everything you've said about it, seems to be a good one.

My nearest Aldi is ~7miles but i rarely if ever go there. Nearset Lidl is ~12-14 miles but again, rarely go there.

Why not keep your 1.7GLE and sell your fiend the one you're using that uses less oil than his?

I'm on Bionic Beaver, am i right in thinking Mint is the "light" version?

My GLE 1.7 will need a fair amount of work, plus costs more to tax than the 1.4.

My friend's 1.4 bodywork is in very good condition, and it only uses a small amount of oil, I suppose that it's possible the bores are not even fully run in.

There are three versions of Mint, Cinnamon, Mate and Xfce, none are heavyweight, but the lightest is Xfce, then Mate. I tend to use the Mate version. Ripped a couple of DVD's today using Linux.

After Lidl and Aldi, I find other shops a rip off. I have no complaints with Aldi / Lidl quality.

Any fuel in the sump will soon evaporate off once the oil gets hot , fortunately this isn't a problem on carburettor cars* as the engine will be undrivable if the float chamber suddenly floods , a rich idle wont harm anything due to the tiny amounts of fuel used and even the plugs will clean themselves up after some good running miles 👍

* = On injection cars fuel is pumped in regardless with some faults however and lots of cold starts and switching off will leave fuel laying around .
When the first Electronic fuel injection Volvo was launched in 1970 the new cars being shunted around in the Ipswich Raeburn Road compound and then at dealers premises all having lots of short period cold running , the sumps would literally fill with pints of fuel , part of the PDI was to drain and add new oil .
