MAF Sensor
So I am getting the intermittent cold start issue on my 855 T5. Once warm it pulls like a train but at idle, it is quite lumpy and looks like it might stall. I have checked for vacuum leaks, used contact cleaner on the electrics etc, cleaned the idea control valve, the camshaft sensor and water temperature sensors are recent. No codes pulled and so I am suspecting the MAF, especially as during lockdown the air filter has got manky (changed). I have today cleaned the MAF with contact cleaner to try and see if thats a problem. It seems however, that if the MAF is the cause, these are, like many other sensors on the 850, getting to be like hen's teeth. I had read all about only using Bosch sensors and have myself suffered the issues when I replaced with a non genuine part about 15 years ago.
Does anyone else have any good experiences of using non Bosch parts? Does anyone know where I can get a genuine Bosch part (my local auto factors cannot source one) No joy on Partsforvolvos, nor Skandix. Does anyone have a working second hand one that I can buy? Sorry for so many questions. It is getting more and more difficult keeping this car on the road with the difficulty in getting genuine parts |

Hi cyclogenesis
Do you know the Volvo part number and the Bosch part number(s)? I don't know anything about 850s but I believe that if you open up the MAF housing you might be able to find a number on the MAF insert then just replace that. See this useful video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtQnE1QW-jU&app=desktop I have fitted a non Bosch in the past and wasn't convinced that it was working correctly so I replaced with a known good used Bosch which is working fine. I think contact cleaner is not recommended for cleaning MAFs. You can buy special MAF cleaner spray, or I think isopropyl alcohol is pretty much the same thing but I can't be 100% sure. Hope that helps, Steve Steve

Yeah I have the part number, Bosch 0280217107. I think this will be tge death of many cars of this era and also the death of the classic car industry (anything post mid 90s) as many of these cars have essential sensors which are no longer manufactured. So far this year I have had:
Seat belt tensioner no longer manufactured Brake Pressure sensor no longer manufactured and now Bosch MAF like rocking horse dooda! |

Yes I am looking for one of those too.
The Volvo part number for the whole unit is 1275749 which supercedes 3507697 Have a look here https://www.autodoc.co.uk/spares-sea...1275749&page=1 https://www.autodoc.co.uk/spares-sea...1275749&page=2 That Bremi part is also sold by FCP Euro so presumably is good quality https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...sensor-1275749 HTH Steve

There you are, it's aftermarket but with a "No Quibble" guarantee. Searching for "Bosch 0280217107" on ebay brought 73 results and in those, lists of vehicles it is also used on - there's a lot of different vehicles!

Thanks Laird. Herein lies the problem. Its not a genuine Bosch and will likely not work with the Motronic ECU. Yes there are plenty of results but the genuine Bosch items are all “Out of stock”.

Anyway. I seem to have resolved my immediate issue. Changing the air filter, cleaning the MAF and checking for leaks and good contacts seems to have resolved the issue. I think the problem may be on my LPG system which is causing fuelling issues. Got it booked in for a check
Thanks for all your comments |

Second, what's the actual running problem with the LPG?

Yeah thanks again the plugs are recent (within the last few 1000 miles). I phoned the fitter today and it is booked in. He thinks the issues I describe are symptomatic of a vaporiser issue. I will post results on here when it gets fixed.
Symptoms - runs fine on Super unleaded. runs like a pig on LPG, like a hunting lawnmower. 235,000 miles so far with 101,000 of those miles on LPG, over 13 years being trouble free before we get any LPG haters on here! LOL |
