Clutch mechanism creaky
The clutch (1992 Torslanda) has developed a loud creaking sound and is very stiff and jerky in use. I don't think it's the pedal itself which seems to move freely. I'm sure I read somewhere that a small amount of oil into the bellhousing will cure such a problem, is that correct? If it's a quick and simple job I might persuade the garage to find an available ramp between jobs, but I need to know what I'm asking them to do.
The problem is worse now we have some hot weather, so I guess it's something to do with metal expanding. The clutch operates perfectly in other respects. Any advice or information much appreciated. |

Probably the clutch release arm pivot creaking.
A common "fix" was to spray some white grease/copaslip through the gaiter with an assistant working the pedal up and down. Obviously trying not to lubricate the whole clutch! |

Thanks for both replies, really helpful, and something to show the mechanic, it doesn't look too much of a challenge once the car's on a ramp. Car booked in for oil change and stuff next Friday so I'll probably have to put up with the clutch until then.

I had a squeaking release bearing, which I cured by carefully poking in a pressure oil can with a few inches of plastic hose stuck on the spout. You can see the bearing with a mirror. A couple of drops gave a permanent fix.
I don't know whether there is a real risk of getting oil on the clutch, but to be on the safe side I immediately started the engine and operated the clutch a few times to spin off any oil. A similar technique incidentally also fixes a noisy prop shaft centre bearing, water pump bearing, or a squeaking alternator bearing. It's amazing how much noise is simply caused by bearings that have run dry. |
