I took on board comments received and have sent it to a localish car audio repairer, since it would appear parts should be available. I haven't heard back from them yet, but they did say it could be a couple of weeks.

The car's going in to the Volvo specialist today to have the tailgate wiring harnesses replaced and they're going to try and fit a secondhand different, but similar, period Volvo radio/cassette, so I could end up with one in the car and a spare if they're both working (worth a punt for £30 including installation!).

Kind regards,

Gary.
See if you can get hold of the CR 906 radio/cassette /CD Changer model it is a superb unit with sockets for an external Amplifier and also a remote 6 CD Changer in the boot . The FM Radio has RDS as well . They should be plentiful with 1990s volvos being scrapped now ...

Thanks for this Clan.

As you said - could be a good model to try to get hold of one.

I've attached an image I got off the web of the rear of a CR-906. Do you have any info about the wiring configuration of those multi-pin connectors?

The round one on the right - that's recognisable on other Volvo stereos as the leads going to the external amp (and it says amp).
The CD is obviously for the CD changer.

Do you know the wiring layout for the other two, being rectangular connectors? Those seem to be on a lot of Volvo stereos post-90s - are they a standard layout?

Thanks
John

the CD Changer socket will work the VOLVO CD changer of the era or there is another which is compatible , cant remember which one , if you need to know let me know .
The plugs on the back are standard Volvo of that age , if they look different to yours get someone to cut them off a scrap car with a reasonable length of cable attached to them. I can help with which pin does what . If you have an External amplifier you won't need the 4 sets of speaker pins built into those sockets .

"I can help with which pin does what" - if so could you please share the pin layout data for those two rectangular multi-pin connectors on the back of the CR-906?

Thanks
John

(Apologies Gary we're off topic here again)

Default Cr-906

This might help. The speaker wires will be different if you connect an external amp. The CR906 has a built in 4x 20W amp.

Hi Lucien

This PDF you uploaded is very useful, doubly so for me because I also have a CR-702 which has that late-80s era 3x3 connector shown in this diagram - plus - it's also got a 2-pin connector with plastic ridges that correspond with the 2-pin connector in that diagram labeled A B but not identified in that diagram. Any idea what that 2-pin connector is for?

Thanks again
John

My notes say:
A = Rheostat (dimmer)? (brown with blue tab)
B = 12V+ with headlights on? (yellow with brown tab)
So looks like a connection to the car's instrument lights dimmer control, and some action connected with turning on the car headlights, maybe to switch on the radio illumination?

But there are ??? there, so Clan could also be right.

Regards
Lucien
