When mine jammed shut last year I managed to open it (eventually) with judicious use of a flat piece of steel using a bit of padding, as Oilydad says. In my case the latch itself wasn't moving down due to a piece of the metal revolving barrel (the bit pointing towards the camera in Oilydad's pic) had snapped off. I fitted a complete barrel off a scrapper, it's only held on with that springy circlip thing, job done. Only thing is I can't lock, it but I never did anyway. Still blame the other half for filling the glovebox with junk.
Pete.
