Cars that drive themselves can become reality within ten yea
A new EU project SARTRE is being launched to develop and test technology for vehicles that can drive themselves in long road trains on motorways. This technology has the potential to improve traffic flow and journey times, offer greater comfort to drivers, reduce accidents, and improve fuel consumption and hence lower CO2 emissions

The technology for this already exists and has been tried and tested in Germany using H.G.V. vehicles.

Fuel savings. Think of a artic truck, there is a lot of aerodynamic drag caused mainlly by the sharp cut off at the rear of the vehicle. The theory is that if another artic tailgates the one in front really, really closely, then the airflow will continue OVER the rear vehicle. Do this with 4 or 5 vehicles and the fuel savings are quite considerable. I read about this 3 or 4 years ago in one of the IRTE magazines.
