Default V40 1.9d idle noise rattle/click

Can Anyone tell me what is making this noise? it only does it on idle, goes when the revs build. its intermittant (stops for a second or two every now and again. seems to be quiet when the engine is cold and gets a bit louder once its warm.

I had issues with my 1.9d when I first got it. In second gear it would dump all boost at 2.5k then after a few months it stopped. Then I realised the boat was fluctuating and fluttering like I had fuelled up with kangaroo juice.

Had the turbo checked out and all was fine. Unplugged maf sensor and the car worked perfectly and plugged it back in and was back on kangaroo juice.

Bought a new maf sensor but it didn't fix the problem. I blanked off my egr valve to test that and it fixed the car. I think the egr actuator was fluttering the valve open and closed which was making the exhaust pressure fluctuate.

Does the car hesitate or lose boost whilst driving? And gentle pulsing of power whilst cruising at a speed?

With the maf plugged in I have no boost until 4000 or more revs. Can't say about the hesitation

Can I unplug the egr and run it to see if the noise stops?

Not sure about unplugging it, I used some thin sheet metal (cut up drinks can) and put it between the actuator and the valve. Three bolts to remove it then just place the face into the metal and trace around and cut. The bolt holes were awkward with a drill but worked. Then just refit the actuator with the metal between that and the valve.

Carb cleaner into the manifold really helped response and low down acceleration. Just don't use the accelerator for a few minutes after starting and direct it to sound horrible as things burn off and move through.

I've tried unplugging the egr, didn't make any difference. Could this noise be the vvt?

My last 1.9D started making a very similar noise when it got to about 140K, it went away as soon as the revs increased.

In my case it was the clutch in the OAP (overrunning alternator pulley).

Loose/broken baffles in front silencer box.

Engine vibrates more at tickover so noisy. As revs rise smoother so rattle stops.

Mine, 2002, makes an awful noise when stopping.
