Engine choice for V40
First post in this forum, I'm hoping I can call on the experience for a bit of help.
Mrs McP is changing car soon now that her new job has the sort of motorway commute that her Pug 107 just isn't great at (quite apart from me worrying what would happen if someone swiped into her...) and the V40 is on the shortlist. Her commute is either 30mins or 50mins of motorway each way, plus some running between locations of 20mins to 1hr on occasion. Usual short journeys running after kids as well. My main concern is whether to go petrol or diesel, given the issues that can crop up with modern diesel engines. There's a wider selection of diesels around obviously and we haven't decided whether to go second hand or new but given this will be a car we own for a good number of years I'd rather not have to expect lots of dealer trips. I do have the option to take it on longer runs with my work (I do 23-25,000 miles a year) so can help with making sure a good few regens have time to run. What's the considered opinion on those here? Likely looking at T3 or D3 if we go with the V40. Thanks in advance for any help, Andy |

For what it is the V40 is expensive. Start adding options and you are close to XC60 money! As your wife is used to a 107, going to the V40 will be a few steps up the ladder, and tbh, unless she is some sort of gadget fanatic, I would stick with a lower spec model, as it is adequate.I woulld also suggest petrol, as whilst some of the new petrol VEA engines are going to find their way into the V40 possibly, the current engines, are proven Ford motors. You mention T3, what about T2 and save yourself £2000 (thats assuming you are going the new route). Whichever model you get rear sensors are a necessity, as rear vsisibilty is like looking through a letter box. Also ensure you have cruise, as some models lack it.

Thanks vr, her car before the Pug was a Land Rover so used to larger cars too. Could look at any car and there's a few on the list but the V40 is a decent contender. T2 could be an option, haven't driven one yet but it seems a bit flat on paper...

Would be worth looking at the Seat Leon with the cylinder on demand 1.4 tsi engine. It's either 140 or 150bhp.

If your considering used i would be more tempted by a used V60 D3 or 4,
They are great motorway cruises and have the volvo 5 pot diesel lump

Indeed I do have a v60 already, lovely car and it'll be staying within for a while.
The V40 would be a second car for Mrs McP to cruise to and from work in, plus shuttle her and kids to family in far flung corners of the country in safety and comfort. Had a test drive at weekend and was impressed, it was a D2 but quite punchy for getting past cars and smooth too even in R-design guise... |

Collected it this afternoon, can't get the grin off Mrs McP's face
D2 R-Design Lux, passion red, 63 plate, 9,000 on the clock. BLIS, park assist pilot, nav, winter pack, spare wheel, flex boot floor, Sensus connected Touch, keyless, lane depart, probably more we haven't found yet. For the money a brilliant car, so smooth and remarkably cheap to run! Insurance only £20 more than the Peugeot 107 its replacing and £20 less in road tax (i.e. Zero!). Just ordering up winter tyres and it'll be perfect. Once again nothing but praise for Gordon @ Taggarts, been brilliant in every dealing with him. No hesitation in recommending him to friends & family. |

Congrats Andy (good guess eh?) Pics please. I like the V40, hoping to get one as a courtesy car some time.
