AWD Transmission: 2006 XC90 V8 Six Speed Transmission Noise

For the past few months, my 2006 volvo XC90 (V8) AWD makes a slip chirp type noise (for lack of a better description) when shifting into gear (both reverse or drive) when the engine is cold. It lasts for about ten minutes, or until the engine is warmed up. The noise is heard when starting out from a stop and just before coming to a complete stop. It is also heard when stepping on the gas as it shifts between gears. It is as if the noise happens when the engine is engaging or disengaging the wheels. Very odd. You can also feel a very slight vibration in the brake peddle when shifting into or out of drive or reverse.

I am advised by the Volvo dealer that the noise is a result of play in the splines that connect to the front drive shafts. They recommend refilling with grease and putting in some form of expoxy. Apparently there is some service bulletin relating to the issue. Not knowing that much about the mechanics of the drive shaft and transmission arrangement, does somebody have the schematics of the connections between the transmission and drive shafts for the V8 AWD.

Well, the source of the noise was very easy to find. I opened the hood and had someone else shift between D and N while I listened for the noise. In two seconds, I found the source - it was caused by rubbing of the rubber in the top engine mount when the engine moved when being engaged and disengaged from the wheels. As the engine heats us, the metal expands, the rubber may become a little softer and there is a little less friction, so the noise disappears. So may have to replace the rubber in the engine mount.

Unbelievable, that the Volvo dealer was not able to locate the noise after two visits. One wonders what they did at the dealership or even opened the hood to listen for it. Instead, they repaired something that was not broken.
