Aftermarket stereo
I have just bought a late 2011 model V70 D5 (ex police) complete with missing radio and butchered centre console. Is it possible to fit a third party stereo head unit into one of these or have I got to find a factory one? I assume it is on the dreaded "CAN BUS electrics" like most newer cars. As a last resort can I locate the loudspeaker feed wires and just run a permanent live to a head unit?

It can be done, seen an ex plod xc70 go through the auction a couple of months ago without a radio and then saw it advertised for sale about a week later with an aftermarket unit in place.
It was also £3500 more expensive! That's even worst than Halfords for over the top pricing. |

Hi,
You could also, theoretically get a 2nd hand unit and console from a breakers and fit them. You'd need to get a dealer or someone with VIDA access to pair the lot back to the car though, as far as I understand things. Des. . .

I believe that you cannot graft a second-hand stereo into a car.
Most stuff that sits on the CANBUS has a serial number which the car needs to know about, and that is via a code. A new one from parts will have the CANBUS graft code with it, this is not the same as the written serial number on the unit. As far as I am aware aftermarket is your only way out. Even the self dipping rear view mirror needs this process. There is an " e-bay users beware" thread somewhere with more detail

Volvo stereo
Got hold of a head unit and control panel from an identical car and fitted it in. It works but shuts off after 30 seconds and then won't come back until you restart the car. It was shutting off the climate control panel as well so I have since swapped parts around and the original climate control panel/radio display is back in the car complete with the buttons (which had been removed as part of the police conversion) from the donor panel. Now I have a working display again which is in its correct place rather than stuck on top of the dash but the radio still shuts off. I only have a delphi diagnostic device which was showing a "communication fail with ICM" error with no radio fitted, that has cleared and stayed away. Is there any hope of getting the thing to work for more than 30 seconds? Radio is actually a Ford unit, has FoMoCo on it anyway. No one to my knowledge does a fitting kit to put an aftermarket unit in a Mk3 or I'd just put a £50 halfords special in it.

Yes you can fit a third party stereo into it.
I have a 2010 Ex Police D5 which came fitted with a third party stereo. It works with the only bug bear being that the radio reception is rubbish. The radio was fitted before i bought the car and so I am thinking about taking it to a decent car electrical specialist to see if they can sort it out. |

No room for a double din in a phase 3, I think a single din unit could be squeezed in with a bit of ingenuity but the radio display isn't part of the head unit nor are the Volume and tuning nob. The "police mod" was to mount the LCD display in a pod on top of the dash where the pop up sat nav belongs. Still leaves the problem of some kind of bezel, any one got a 3D printer??
