My mechanic's opinion was that the rear trailing arm bushes are rather small for the size of the XC60, they are the sort of size he would expect on a compact like a focus.

Glad you got yours sorted Voltan, I get mine back from the dealer this morning, they agreed to replace the faulty bushes and the steering rack, and they've topped up the oil which they didn't do in their alleged service that it had before I bought it.

So Volvo got it wrong and us owners have to pay for this defect in design ? I suspect your mechanic is right. The XC is a big heavy car compared to the focus and if dimensionally the same will struggle to have a decent life expectancy.

My mechanic was almost right, the dealer confirmed the bushes are the same as a Mondeo.

5 years out of a set of bushes isn't too bad, Volvo's pricing is steep for replacement but at 5 years old getting it serviced at an independent is more likely, as is using third party bushes rather than getting them from Volvo. £90 each ex VAT from Volvo, I've seen prices as low as £50 a pair inc VAT for third party ones and I reckon 4 to 5 hours labour at £40 an hour means you could get the job done for easily half the price quoted by Volvo.

I have had a quote today £395 for replacing the rear bushes. This was straight off the set time and price from the Volvo dealer on Anglesey. Just had an annual service at £ 245 (interim) 89,000 miles. Car is a 10 plate but the dealer stamped the book in the 7 year or 122k box. Only did it to get free software update.

Using the "special" removal tool it's supposed to take an hour per side. Tool is £ 200 but I bet you can hire one.
