Beautiful car Othen - well done, or should I say lucky you - smile. I have had several over the years, mostly estate bodies and, counting my first - a 145, I am now on my 13th (11th 240 as I had a 260 for a while too) smile. Enjoy

Thank you so much - I must admit I do consider myself very fortunate enough with the RB, it has been the perfect car for me.

I have only owned two 240s: a new estate in about 1986/87 and the RB.

Default Rear wheel arch liners - Part 3

The rain stopped for a while this morn so I thought I'd finish off the driver's side rear wheel arch project.

This was the liner after a bit of moulding with the hot air gun and trimming (for things like access to the shock absorber top mount):

First I fixed it in place with a couple of large self-tapping screws:

... then I used some (4 actually) small self-tapping screws to fasten the edge around the wheel arch, this pulled everything together quite nicely:

I took everything apart and painted all the metal I'd drilled with silver Hammerite (I'm a great fan of Hammerite) and reassembled:

It is hard to see any difference (which was the intent). There are a couple of 2-3mm gaps around the circumference, I'm planning to run a thin bead of black mastic around the join between the plastic liner and the steel wheel arch. That nice Mr Bazos will be delivering a tube of black mastic today (Amazon Prime is quite fabulous).

... and the RB looks exactly the same as previously, so I took it for a test ride and there were no funny noises... good:

I'm pretty pleased with the outcome for a tenner and a couple of hours work. I think the result is in keeping with the RB's ethos, but should protect those rear wheel arches pretty well.

... all I need now is for Luke to find the left hand liner for me :-)

:-)

Excellent work Alan! Surprised you didn't use the plastic rivets to secure the liner to the arch, basically they push through the holes then a pin gets pushed into them to secure them. Often this pin has a thread so can be unscrewed for removal.

At least with the second liner, you know what to do and where!

The plastic fasteners I had would have been too thick Dave, there just wasn’t room to fit them on the overlap between the plastic and the steel. If I’d got some thinner plastic fasteners I don’ think they would have been strong enough.

You are right, the passenger side liner will take half the time and should fit better.

Thought there was probably a good reason Alan! I can see i'll have similar fun fitting the front 940 liners to mine but at least they should be the right shape to start with.

I’ve sealed around the outer edge of the liner with black mastic this afternoon, which has made it even more stable. What I may do it replace the steel self tapping screws one at a time with plastic screws now it is all settled in place. I’m hoping the plastic liner stays in shape permanently - but I’ll leave it to settle for a few weeks to make sure nothing distorts.

I’m quite pleased with this outcome - another small enhancement for the RB at almost no cost. If Luke can find the LH liner for me I’ll get that fitted during the summer and the RB will be pretty well protected against the elements next winter.

:-)

Definitely an improvement! As you say, just need the other one to match now!

The liners can also be edge sealed with "E" or "D" profile (black) self adhesive draught excluder or weather strip (depends on the gap for thickness required)
Providing the plastic liner is clean the strips will stick well:~

The self tapping screws can also be stainless and providing the holes are painted, treat the screw threads with copper grease then fasten up.

Done the above with the liners purchased (as previous mail etc)
It is worth treating all the hidden body parts with a wax treatment to include the wheel arch lips.
Regards Bob.
