Default Heated seats in a 240.

Recently fitted some fresh seats in the 240.
The blue and black wires have 12 v when the heated switch is operated and there is continuity at the seat but the seat doesn’t warm up.
I know the continuity could just be a short but surely that would cause a problem elsewhere.

Any ideas?

Not urgent, just wondering!🤔

Measure the impedance Andrew - if it is suspiciously low (say under an Ω - I don't have the specification to hand, but someone might) then it will probably be a short within the heater element. If some of the element still works then maybe it won't draw enough current to blow a fuse?

Are you sure there isn't a thermostatic control on the car that isn't switching in because it is too warm out? The Barge has one set at 14c, I haven't noticed it come on recently.

Thanks Alan ,I’ll check the impedance. Might be a day or so. Not good at bending atm.

If all else fails, I’ll get my brother, an ex RR electrical engineer to have a butchers.

He’s only next door!🧐

I think there is a thermostat embedded in the seat somewhere - that would be a likely culprit.

I didn’t hear about the earlier seats having thermostats until recently?

One thing’s for certain, I can definitely WAIT for next winter!🧐

Cheers bud!

Pestered brother, 2.4 ohms , so should take current at about 5/6 amps. The mystery continues!

Will check when bro comes back from choir practice!🤨

Far from wishing to teach my Granny how to suck eggs, 'Moomoo', but you will be very careful with that, won't you. I've seen a seat destroyed by fire as a result of a 'short' down there, and it could have been much worse.

I've also a feeling in my water that there was a recall by Volvo concerning this problem at the time, but I could be thinking about something else.

Regards, John.

Thanks John, the heated seat has no real importance. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter. It’s Mrs. Moomoo’s bum , not mine. I’ve only ever used a heated seat in snow ploughs, not much then . I must have a 3kw backside!😁

Heads up appreciated!👍

A couple of Ohm and 5 or 6 Amps sounds about right Andrew, that makes it about 60W per seat - that should certainly be giving a heating effect. It’s hard to imaging where 120W is going otherwise, maybe it is just the thermostat cutting out too soon?

Ah, but in order to maintain domestic harmony, I'd suggest getting Mrs Moomoo's heated seat sorted before next winter, plenty of time, and brownie points when you sort it. You don't want the cold shoulder so to speak 😀😀

Cheers
Steve
