Default Year 2000 C70 auto gearbox

Hi all, hope you are well.

I have a question, I have owned our C70 for 21 years, we bought it from volvo when it was 3 years old. The auto gearbox have to clunck a bit when it goes from neutral into drive, and sometimes as the gears change up and down, it's never had the gearbox oil changed and wondered if I changed the oil, it would cure it.it doesn't do this all the time.

Assuming this is the AW-55 5 Speed gearbox, then it is not a simple complete drain and fill, it has to be done in parts. Eventually, once the oil is nice and red, you may have to complete gearbox reset with VIDA, so that you tell it that the gearbox oil is refreshed.

From my side, it takes about 4 attempts at 3litres each time.

Use the yellow dipstick though at the end and shift through the gears each time. I played it safe and drove the car for about a week between each fluid change.

^^^ What he said.

Drain, you'll get about 3L, refill, drive 50-100 miles, repeat another 2-3 times.

If it is the 5-speed AW55 then you fill through the dipstick hole - do not remove the big nut on top of the box.

Many thanks, I spoke to volvo parts, the oil I need is part no. 1161640, I take it I don't need any special tools, just drain and refill.

Most main dealers don't know how, or simply don't want, to care for an autobox of this age so, before you shell out on the fluid, and as you are in the UK, consider having the EDT cleaning and transfer method carried out.

See links to the EDT site (post #13) in Tenuta's thread: Wow - changed auto gearbox oil and now like new ...and check their locations as you may have an independent close to you.

Many thanks for the reply, I spoke to a local independent auto gearbox specialist and they quoted me over the phone £158, but they don't use volvo oil. They have been going for 40 years so should know their stuff.

As long as it's JWS3309 Toyota IV fine. I'd worry having a shop do this, they'll put any old ATF in. Needs a Magnefine too really. And with labour £158 sounds too cheap.

Buy Mannol JWS3309, at least 15L. Likely 20L . Flush till it's Bright red.

Many thanks, is the JWS 3309 the equivalent to the correct volvo oil for this gearbox. When I spoke to volvo last month it was quite expensive around £75 a bottle,I've held back from that independent gearbox specialist as the last thing I need is the incorrect oil being fitted. Sorry for the late reply.
