If the gearbox overheats this can happen , were you holding it on the clutch on a hill in a queue ? something like that ? Remember there is no torque converter this has mechanical clutches slipping in oil when you creep in traffic or up hills in traffic . , advisable to use the handbrake as per highway code .

It doesn't have a clutch is the Powershift (automatic) model and has hill control.

The Powershift automatic gearbox transmits the motive force from the engine to the drive wheels with double mechanical clutch discs, as opposed to Geartronic which instead uses a hydraulic torque converter.

In theory it could be the clutch discs?

It doe's have a clutch, just not a pedal.
It's an electronic manual change gear box, if that makes sense, works the same as a ordinary gear box, but controlled by a computer.
Apologies if I'm wrong.

I think so having previously owned a Peugeot 508 rxh with that system, Peugeot only use a single clutch where as most other manufacturers use a dual clutch.

As said above it is based on a normal MANUAL gearbox but controlled by hydraulics and a computer , it has 2 input shafts , one for gears 1 , 3 , and 5 and the other for gears 2 , 4 and 6 , Each input shaft has a friction clutch running in oil .

You didn't say what the circumstances were when it happened . .. do you think it could have overheated due to too much creeping / slipping ? These gearboxes are very reliable normaly , Don't forget to make sure it's gearbox oil and filter are changed at 50000 mile intervals on the service .
