Thinking of scrapping it
I think the time has come to cut my losses.
My ‘07 D5 has done over 140K but now needs a new transfer case and the transmission refurbishing. I just can’t bring myself to spend over £3K on it, and I don’t have the tools, knowledge or space to break it for spares which is a shame. What might I be able to get for it if I sold it for spares? |

From what I have learned over the last couple of years the only real weak point is the gearbox - if the car is otherwise in great condition may well be worth saving as once the work is done you should have a well sorted XC90. Suggest you try discussing some options with a good Indy. They may offer to source the parts needed from a breaker and fit them for you or allow you to find the parts and then they fit. Good breakers will offer a full refund if you find a fault so you have some protection there too.
While you look you could purchase a run around for a few hundred quid and if you choose well sell it afterwards for virtually same as you bought it. If you are good with the spanners you might find you can improve it and make some money when you come to sell! Last edited by XJSDriver; Jun 9th, 2020 at 16:53. |

I'd have a look on e-bay - there were companies offering fixed price engine and gearbox transplants using second hand parts. The transfer box for the later (185/Tf-80) cars is plentiful and cheap second hand.

What are the issues with the transmission ? Some garages may overlook simple fixes and rather suggest bigger repairs

As suggested a good indy should be able to do the job for you if you can source the major parts - let them sort any seal kits you might need, no more than a day I don't think. Might end up and maybe £1500 - £2k. I don't think you'll need 3k though. OR - while you're on the phone to the breakers, ask them what they'd give you for a complete car.....you sure won't get anything similar for the same money that's for sure. Mine's done 307k, manual box though and 2nd bevel gear unit (4th spline sleeve). It's worth more to me to keep it going than try and replace it with anything the same as a cost to repair (within reason). Don't be too hasty to condemn it :-) |

If you do decide to sell it - I'd bang it on ebay as a "Spares Repairs" case, sometimes they make strong money that way.
