help. can anyone tell me what i should be getting to the gallon
in my newly aquired 244 dl auto 1982( bought for the wife )
ive ran it from full to empty and its only done 200 miles to the tank ( not using reserve )
pleeeeeese tell me this is not normal ?????

first thing i did when i bought it was to service it
new plugs- points airfilter ( boy-black that was ) following the haynes manual ive checked the cold start valve.

the only other thing ive thought of it is fitted with glt alloys and tyres, the old guy ( git ) i boughtit of told me it was quite "economical on fuel " ( pity he was on the truth !! )
mind you if you normaly drive a cheiftan tank a reputed four gallons to the mile it would seem economical...

having said that he had only fitted the wheels weeks before i bought it . and he used it very little . its only done 122,000 in 20 years.

my own car a 1990 740 gl estate ( manual ) 2ltr economile engine has done 350.000+ .ranked 55 in the high milers .....and 30+ MPG still..

pleease can any one help , or is it destined to rot on the driveway,

at around 16 / 17 mpg it would be cheaper for her to use taxis for shopping trips......

What kind of driving is it used for?? For City driving, that sounds normal but not for highway driving.

My 244 (B21E/M40) did 16mpg/21mpg in the city (winter/summer) and up to 30mpg on the highway. Yours is and automatic which doesn't help.

I don't know how different the fuel consumption is on a B21A and B21E though, if that's what you have.

many thanks for that henrik

it certanly confirms the mpg im getting is ' normal ' unfortunatly
i was expecting more...but it was only bought as a second car for occasional use by my wife, three days after i bought it my own car , the 740 developed backpressure, with oil everywere ....

so the 244 was being used heavily until this one was repaired.

after seven hours under the bonnet this weekend it is now fixed.
the oil breather box was solid but having had a simlar problem years ago i knew what was needed, at the same time i replaced the inlet manafold seal, that was leaking , and also did some well overdue servicing....( luckly for me the camshaft oil seal was not blown as i first thought ) so now the 244 will be able to rest a while...

many thanks again .....graham n roberts......
