Default Poor starting.

My car has developed a fault, that is it's hard to start, I have noticed that the glow plug warning light only shows for 1 or 2 seconds, I think I should replace the glow plug relay first to see if that extends the time the glow plugs run for, if that doesn't resolve the problem then after that I would look to replace the glow plugs. However I have been told that the battery could be the source of the problem and as the one fitted is still the original battery supplied when delivered new.
My car now shows 116k miles and is 9years old. It's a V70 2.5D5
Any body have any thoughts please.

Glow plugs aren't required at current temps and won't be an issue so keep your money in your pocket.
You may have a leaky injector but your age and mileage suggest this is unlikely.

Slow cranking speed will do it as well. Could be the earth strap is corroded or the starter motor itself is under par or the battery is not delivering enough. If jump starting from the under bonnet points improves the start you could suspect the earth strap, the battery connections or the battery itself. My battery is original at 11yrs and 150k.
You may find failed glow plugs and shout Eureka and on replacing them find it makes no difference at all because as Cheshire said these motors don't need them unless the block is below 7 degrees or so. Rail pressure is the main determinant of clean starting.

If its glow plug related, you'll tend to find it will be lumpy and smokey when it starts. The glow plugs stay on longer than the light is illuminated but you could try waiting until the light goes out and then switching ignition off and then on again just in case the extended delay is not working.

I have same engine and same mileage as you and when cold it feels like it's struggling to start/slow crank even though it starts first time every time, when warm it starts lovely, is this just the way it is or not? Graham

As an experiment this morning I started the car from cold without waiting for the glo plug light and it fired up on the second or third compression. Air temp was 2 degreees.
Slow cranking of itself will delay starting. Try jump starting from the underbonnet points. If it spins faster and starts quicker you have a battery and or earth problem.

Think I'll try that on the weekend. I think I can eliminate a battery problem as its only 12 months old, just need to work out how to stop the headrest speaker for telephone to stop hissing even when off without pulling fuse and it displaying in call service required :-D

You can eliminate the battery when you've tested the battery.
The fact it's relatively new means nothing if you have a parasitic drain and it sounds like one part of your electrics isn't behaving quite right.

When doing the jump be aware that a lot of jump lead clamps are bad at establishing good connection so if at first........... a few judicious wiggles are in order.

I should have said I hope the battery is ok haha it's got a green light on it anyway so hope it isn't that.
