Default Pollen Filter

I bought a pollen filter to replace the one fitted on my 1997 S70.
On removing the plastic cover, I found that there was no filter and no filter housing, just a horn type entry to the fan inlet!
Does anybody know if I can retrofit a housing/filter?
Will it affect the fan performance?
Is it a Volvo mistake?

Pollen filters are optional extras, it appears yours was not fitted with one. You can buy the complete kit from any dealer. It comes with housing, filter and instructions.
