knock / clunk
ok, so I've got a knock / clunk noise which happens when I release the clutch sometimes in first or second gear, but its worse when I release the clutch when going backwards (reverse gear).
I had wondered if it were an engine mount, but I've had it on my ramps and they look fine to me I've booked it into the village mechanic for the end of the week, but do you guys have any ideas?

Engine top mount?
Exhaust - particularly the rearmost bracket? Both very easy to check - and fix! Jack |

thanks Jack, the top engine mount is fairly new and ok. The noise is coming from the front of the car, so not the rear bracket.

Your engine mounts are getting old, along with the tranny mount. A lift will be needed to check them easily.

I've done a bit of googling, and have read that a a typical cause of a clunk in reverse gear is a worn transmission mount.
But I've looked at my transmission mount already and looked okay to me, didn't look split nor did it move when I grabbed it. But it probably is original to the car. I have fairly recently changed my top engine mount as that was split. So is it possible that the cause is the transmission mount, even though it visually looks okay?

Looks are deceiving. You could have a donut mount failing, or the engine mount by the timing belt. These mounts are relatively inexpensive. A mechanic will inspect mount movement with a pry bar.

Gearbox torque mount is easy to take off and check. My guess is it will be the cause of the problem
