Yes. I once misjudged a kerb in a rental Ford Focus, driving on what is now the "wrong" side of the road for me, and tore open the sidewall. It had a space-saver spare, which I fitted. It was fine (I stuck religiously to the 80kph maximum).

I have a space-saver spare in the V40, but for long trips I have a full-size spare. Since there are only the two of us now, I can fold the rear seats and there's plenty of space for it.

Default Spare Wheel Sizing etc

Thanks folks for the feedback. I did use the tempa spare on my previous S60 (unfortunately gone to that great Volvo garage in the sky recently!) sticking to the recommendations etc., and it was fine.
When I bought my V40 a couple of weeks ago we had long negotiations with the dealer about spares and eventualy it went in as part of the deal. One of the things that put me off an S60 was the lack of even a wheel well for a spare - at least the V40 has that facility!

I was on the verge of buying a Mercedes A-Class, when my brother pointed out that, not only did the thing have no spare wheel, but it also lacked even a place for one. MB India supply a spare with the A-Class, with the ridiculous result seen below:

I believe that MB Australia was also running into resistance because of the lack of a spare - how many country garages are going to stock these run-flat tyres?

That is roughly the approach I take with my S60, although often it sits in the footwell behind the passengers seat.

I only need a spare wheel when I'm driving long distances (London -> Glasgow) or down into the deep dark rural South West. The rest of the time, it sits in my garage - and my boot space isn't impinged at all.

If I had a full car, it would be a bit more problematic, but I rarely have more than two, or at a push three - so still plenty of space.

That said, I'd love a boot which had room for a spare wheel and was still a good decent sized boot!

Ditto. I sometimes do the long haul across France from Basel to the Chunnel, and, with a train booking in mind, the last thing I want is to be reliant either on a space-saver or on Volvo turning up with a replacement.

One of the temptations to buy a Golf was the possibility of having a full-sized (steel) spare and a boot similar in size to the V40's. In the end, Volvo's excellent Swiss guarantee and 10 years' free service won!
