So what are the symptoms, then?

Does it only click?
Or does it crank and not start?
Is the cranking normal or slow?
Does the starter spin but not engage (makes a noise like a washing machine)?

Tell us a bit more.

full key turn, you can hear it click and try, no noise at all though, no grating or cranking

My experience with this sort of thing is that you can't repair this yourself and expect it to last more than a few weeks. Bite the bullet and fit an exchange starter (not a scrapper).

this actually sounds most like it may be a simple connection issue between the transformer (which puts the click noise out) and the starter. perhaps the moisture has shorted something? put a multimeter over the 2 connections going into/out of the starter motor to find out
