On looking further down the list of postings It looks like there is a terminal fault with all ETM,s up to 2001, and that Volvo are agreeing to replace all currently faulty ones. Can this be correct?

Not quite.

# The ETMs fitted up to 2001 were of a poor design and fail easily.
# They cost around £600 to replace as the part is in the order £300 to £400 and there is some fair labour to be done, which requires a software download that only your Dealer can do.
# Volvo are in the process of admitting that they screwed up - the US has made more progress here than in the UK, but we're expecting a global resolution to the problem in 2006, which should ("should") include back-payment for people who have had to replace them in the past.
# At the moment, if your ETM is broken, you have to buy a new one.

Hope that helps.

Default "Reduced Performance Also"

I to have a 2000 V70 (New shape), although it's 2.4T. I've had it fom new and done 47,000 miles. It is showing the "EMISSIONS SERVICE REQUIRED" message permenantly for a fortnight now. The symptems are slightly different though. The engin starts fine and runs O.K. on a light trottle and will cruise at 70 mph. The symptems occur when accelerating fairly hard in third and fourth gear. At about 2500-2800 rpm. the engin faulters the power drops and acceleration is lost. It's not so bad in first and second gear though probably because there is not so much load on the engin.

I had the car checked by an indipendant Volvo specialist who said that the computer reading suggested that the problem is with the turbo waste gate operating valve. I then had the turbo removed and checked by a turbo specialist who told me that there is nothing wrong with it. And that the problem is lightly to be a sensing valve that controls the turbo waste gate.

Any comments please?

I notice that in the other "Reduced Preformance" posting reference is made to the "Dreaded ETA" unit. Dare I ask for more details please, I've spent a lot of mony so far with no progress?

Why did the garge inspect the turbo when the reported fault was with the regulating (control) valve?

This valve is attached to the air filter with 3 small pipes on it and an electrical connection.

Make sure the electrical connection is tight. Try unplugging it and remaking the connection.

A new valve is only about £50 so I would be asking why the garage did not address the actual fault reported by the on board diagnostics.
