Smoking exhaust and excessive oil
Hi all,
My 2006 XC90 has white smoke coming from the exhaust. It also has a lot, like 250-500ml of oil coming out of the exhaust pipe just where it enters the back box via a crack. The engine pressure is high too. If I remove the dipstick it pops and flies out with force. Any ideas what can be causing this, I did have a slight coolant leak but was fixed the same day and the engine didn’t overheat. |

Crankcase pressure too high, not a good thing in any way.

What can cause this? Am I best of starting with the breather. Car has been absolutely fine until today

It's either high becquse of a breather problem, or high because something is pressurising it, such as combustion gasses. You certainly need it sorted, don't want to be driving it like that.

Yes, the PCV is tucked behind the oil filter housing.
They can and do cause the exact issues that you are having and whilst a little awkward to change they are relatively cheap so worth doing first. When I bought my XC90 D5 185 with 116k miles on it 4 years ago it was running faultlessly but being aware of the PCV issue I changed it as a matter of course. From memory it was under £30

No, the bit that I bought is the top cover to the right of your photo.
It's fiddly to fit with the oil filter housing in situ but it can be done . It is also possible to remove the entire unit that you have pictured but you would need new gaskets to refit to block. This is what I bought and the company that I used. Make sure that you order the correct part for YOUR car rather than taking my example as being entirely correct. No Guarantee that it will sort your issues BUT it's worth a try as it's cheap. 👍 https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...ather/1033347/
