Default DAB/Mp3

New member here, so I hope I'm on the right forum posting this.

I've just bought a '54 plate S60T 2.5 which has an HU 850 radio /cd unit. Having been used to a Blaupunkt DAB/Mp3 in my old Audi, I would be interested to know if anyone has been successful in adapting/converting the the HU 850 to DAB. Or does all the softare in 850 make this impossible? I know there is an after market DAB converter for FM radio made by Pure but it seems a messy solution and prone to a lot of dropout from what I've read.
Also, Volvo used to produce an ipod/mp3 modificaton for their radio/cd head units, but according to the main dealer in Nottingham they have stopped making these. Anyone know if these are still available anywhere and if it's a main dealer job to fit them?

Any advice/help much appreciated!

These include radio/stereo head units (AUM), CD players (IAM), self dipping rear view mirrors (UEM), speedo heads (DIM) and several others to name but a few.

The dealers cannot over write the software in these units. Also second hand integrated key fobs (KIR) cannot be re-programmed to another car even by the dealers. Although these need a software download to be programmed, the dealer also needs the two unique codes that are supplied with the original packaging for each remote. These codes are not kept on record.
hi, i see a trident, i used to work on them at hatfield

Dear Alpha206,

you are not 100% right, some of the parts can be used in another vehicle, like dim, radios, ecus and etc. most of these units has a chip inside called eeprom, which is 1 write only, but if you solder it out and out a new blank chip in, you can take it to volvo, they'll do a soft download and of you go. i know this well as when my dim and stereo went on 52 plate s60, contacted volvo and got a heart attack from their prices. started doing a research and in our Russian friend's forum I found a guy called Dima, he told me exactly what to do to "virginise" a donor dim and radio. which i did, and after soft download my car is up and running again.

I have recently purchased a DDM from e-bay only to find it would not work and could not be re- programmed. I really don't understand why Scrap Yard Breakers continue to sell these items, knowing full well they are useless on other cars. I managed to source a new Switch module for £250.00 , awaiting delivery so I can have it programmed to my v70 d5 . Fingers crossed problem solved

I did hear you could reuse one if it was deprogramed from the original car first using VIDA before removal. Only a dealer would be able to do it though as VIDA has to contact Volvo Sweden via the internet. I guess that is the catch.

My father in law has an XC90 that the DDM needs replacing. I have purchased a 2nd hand unit which I fitted today only to find it doesn't work. I was wondering if it needed programming or reprogramming. I have vida but that only says the module and car are not talking to each other.

it will only work in the car it was built with due to security and serial numbers ...

At least the alarm siren is interchangeable as I found out this week.

Just needed to do a UEM reset afterwards.

To add to this:

Due to the way Volvo construct the network in the vehicle and the optimisation of device message priority, differents MYs may have different device addresses for the same device.

This is why a DDM from a 2006 car may not work on a 2008 car. Even though it looks identical.

To ensure functionality, always fit the identical part number, or any subsequent part number as advised by VIDA

As well as the device address issue, many devices are programmed for the car, so that all the functions work with the correct parameters. This may be for region specific compliance (USA vs europe), or country level compliance (alarms in Belgium are different to alarms in Switzerland), or may be for vehicle specification (Momentum vs Inscription etc), or part compatibility (for control unit X to work with sensor type Y it must be programmed)

A number of devices are loaded with the vehicle chassis number for identification if stolen, and to track the device if removed.
This also prevents 2nd hand parts being fitted to a car being repaired.

To code a new unit, the new unit must be a virgin. Virgin means no chassis number stored.

Revirgining is frowned upon, not supported, and often simply not possible.
Some after-market revirgining tools exist for other brands, but I have never seen one for Volvo.
