Default Is it normal...

...for the aircon compressor to click on and off every few seconds?? and also it sometimes kicks in with a real thud which I only really seem to notice when it's stationary.

So am I unduly worried or is something about to go bang??

Nope, not normal. Every couple of minutes maybe, every couple of seconds suggests your low on charge and it keeps shutting down due to low pressure.

Wot SD said above ^^^^^ You need yer Air con Re-Gassing & bring up to pressure.... Low A/C Pressure ALWAYS makes the compressor "Cut in & out" more frequently

Same here mike, comes on for about 10 secs then off prob every minute or bit more. Had mine gassed in Jan and seems to be ice cold. Maybe a pressure comparison from vida/ vadis is called for?

I did read in the owners manual that it cuts off under high load (accelerating etc) and thought that may have something to do with it!?

Mine also does the "comes on for about 10 secs then off prob every minute or bit more" in this weather. If the inside temp is very hot then the compressor will stay on for a long time.

Over pressure, failing clutch, blocked expansion valve/orifice/tube, or bad temperature sensor may produce same symptoms. Easy enough to check refrigerant charge with A/C manifold with pressure gauge, and check clutch air gap with feeler gauge.
