Unhappy 940 LPT Won't rev over 4000rpm under load

Hi all...

I have a 96' 940CD LPT Estate 95000 on the clock...
anyway...

It is pretty sluggish..........
I have just noticed that if you change up through the gears as it reaches 4000rpm it feels as if the revs are limited?
When the car is in neutral or blipping throttle inbetween gear changes it will go over 4000..??
also.. in 5th on a slight incline on a motorway around 60/70 it will not hold speed very slow acceleration at that sort of speed..
It runs fine and smooth in normal use.. just very slow in the higher revs as if no power at all...

any ideas..?? turbo/air filter etc.....

When I bought my 945se lpt I thought if this is 135hp it sucks but after changing the oil n filter, cleaning the crankcase breather, idle valve thingy, throttle body, gearbox oil change and giving it a good motorway run with a good few kickdown overtakes it was transformed. hth

thanks...

I shall start to have a little look at a few things...
I know it is due a service but i shall look around for a few things myself this week..
I have a garage that are good guys though... hoping its nothing too pricey...

it is very strange though... only noticed it the last 2 days.. Iv'e been on the motorway and had 5 of us in it and it is really sluggish.. i did notice the power dropping off on hills.. and not big ones at that.. but really noticed the 4000rpm limit.. (i usually don't get near 4000 as thats just below gear change range - and i drive on the slow side anyway...)

HI,

Well, my 940 has since been modified a little and has a new chip installed.
However, the block at 4000 rpm has gone.
But I did also add a MBC at the same time as chipping the car.

The above leads me to suspect that the issue is/was with the turbo. The car does suffer a little drop off when "extending it's capabilities" shall we say.
Could be the waste gate, so I will likely be considering a bigger turbo at some point in the near future..

Ask your garage to check the turbo... You may be pleasantly (I hope) surprised...

Recently remedied something similar in my 960 auto estate. The revs would not go above 4000 on the road and the box would not change up from third when under pressure. Once I backed off the pedal the box would change up but as soon as further power was requested the box dropped again to third and the revs held at 4000.

There is a grassy bank behind where the car is parked. Some leaves were put where the exhaust outflow hits the bank and the engine was revved up. The leaves just fluttered a bit when I expected them to be blasted up the bank. We opened the exhaust at the joint just behind the cat and again revved the car. No-one could keep their hand near the end of the pipe because of the pressure (not the heat).

The rest of the exhaust was examined and one section of it was found to have an internal diameter of about 1/2 inch only. The back pressure was fooling the system controls.

Replacement sections of pipe fixed the problem and the car is now as it should be.

Not the same issue I had as the 940 exhaust had been changed for a S/S one with 2.75 inch pipe.

But I think a flappy wastegate may fool the ECU and cut the rpm or hold/limit the power..
Sorted anyway (for the most part) and I'll not know exactly until I whip off the turbo..

right...

Just dropped it into my local friendly garage (a garage that I actually trust - been using them for years)
It's in for it's pre-holiday service.. I told them it was a bit sluggish and ran through a few things... They were happy at me bringing it in as they are big Volvo fans (family run garage) I told them about the sluggish performance so they are going to investigate and check if there are any blockages/loose pipes etc anywhere...

I shall report back when I get it back tommorow evening...
(I used to do all my servicing and mechanicals myself but as Iv'e got older Iv'e got very lazy and would rather someone else do it...) My last car a Volvo 440CD I did all the work myself.. Brake line replacement & bearing excepted....

ps: my 940 estate has the manual box!
