Question

It doesn't look like it. I don't even know what they are.

Sadly not - I'm in Warsaw at the moment and my C70 is in Belfast! But one of these days I'll get there. So tell me, what is a surface discharge spark plug????

I'm also curious, never heard of them.

From the name alone the best I could guess is that ther is no point on the end where it sparks, but simply the actual surface of the plug is charged in order to spark?

If that is what they are, what are the benefits to be had? sounds very bizarre to me.

Default From Google for 'surface discharge...'

Diagram says it all, but why would you need it except for 'optimal ignition reliability'?

From http://www.beru.com/english/produkte...zen/ultrax.php -

Can't paste diagram in this forum, but scroll down until you get to...

"Schematic diagram of the 6 possible ways to ignite the air-fuel mixture -

"The multifunction principle for optimal ignition reliability: various principles of operation are available for the formation of the sparking path — air discharge, surface discharge and combined air-surface discharge. At the same time, the 4 ground electrodes are offset in height in pairs. On the left the path to one of the two lower electrodes can be seen, (surface discharge), on the right the two possibilities on one of the upper electrodes (air discharge and air-surface discharge). In this way there are six different paths for the ignition sparks."

Looks very much like the Bosch Super 4 plug, more modern design etc perhaps. Be interesting to see how much they cost.

Not worth it in my opinion, the super 4's operated on the principle that because there were 4 electrodes you always got the best spark, to be honest they were ****, NGK plugs were far better and what I always used in other cars and in the Rover up until it's most recent spec. I use Greddy Iridium ones now at a colder grade than standard.

I don't see there being many, if any, gains from these Surface discharge plugs and they probably cost an arm and a leg.

Default Trivia posting gets me from 'new' to 'junior'

The last posting on results of a Google search got me from 'new' to 'junior' member in the Community member description. Since I've been in VOC since about 1994 and am listed as a forum member since 2002 (it seemed earlier), I kinda didn't like the 'new' bit, though I'm quite happy with junior/menial/non-expert.
