HI!
no i don't have VVT on those cars... and i don't think volvo ever used VVT on T5... i'm sure the 2 covers are on the good engine ne is mint and the other is oily....... on the volvo procedure, thy use a tool made of 2 long screws, set in the spark plug hole, to compress the cover on the head. I'll try this afternoon to bolt the cover very slowly, turning the bolt by hand... and we'll see... but it's very strange... thanks to you |

TAADAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!
after several tries here I am ! V70 : after 4step hand tightening on every 40 bolts the 2 camshafts turn by hand. exhaust, totally free. intake, hard to start but turn almost freely until you stop turning 855 : after 5step hand tightening on every 40 bolts the camshafts turn... ALMOST by hand... exhaust, little hard to turn. intake impossible tu turn by hand, even with pulley. can turn only using a little 1/4 10mm ratchet... but it turns !!!!! After spending 3 hours... i really think that oil flow really help them turning easily.... LET'S CONTINUE BUILDING ENGINES !!!! thanks to you all |

the camshafts should turn freely , have the heads overheated by any chance? Maybe they will get free when the head is bolted to the block .

I just re assembled the 850 engine head, and i'm quite confident. everything is in place, and everyting turns more softly that when it was totally free....
Of course, i do it within the play not to touch piston with valve... i can't turn it by hand because of the hydraulic lifter, but i can turn it by a little ratchet thanks to everybody ! i'll tell you if the engine starts , after a 24 mounth sleep.... |

make sure everything is clean
bit late to this one and I may be stating the obvious but the cams run direct in the housing so any bits of grit or dirt tighten the clearances.
Is there an oil mark around the cam or housing, by this I mean the brown line at the edge of the running face and on the cams. If you look at a crank pin there is the shiny bit where the bearings run in the middle but the outer edges may have this line usually on the main bearing housings. Its only a few microns but it does make a difference. Scrub everything clean and use some very fine emery to remove any burrs and oilmmarks. Pump lots of oil through the galleries because the oil may be carrying crap out into the housing. When you have done this wash your hands thoroughly and re assembe. The cams should spin in the housing with minimal pressure. The only other thing would be to get an engine reconditioner to check the line bore on the assembled housing but if as you say they are a matched pair they should be ok. Good luck
